Within the context of feminist and gender studies, Vaginal Camera is a visual research creating images that disrupt patriarchal culture, through a technique that subverts traditional heteronormative gender roles.
The Vaginal Camera literally employs the vagina as a camera to take the photographs. It encompasses a series of portraits and self-portraits, realised with a custom-made pinhole cylinder, that exploits the darkness of the body to take the photos. The brass device is inserted into the vagina to grant the darkness necessary for the picture to be taken. The feature of darkness, essential to photography, is also a noteworthy quality of female internal genitalia which are concealed from sight.

This experimental photographic technique touches along the lines of different topics linked to gender representations: it subverts the traditional roles of the woman/passive/model and man/active /photographer; it invites to reconsider the vagina as an active organ performing agency, rather than a passive receptacle for heterosexual male scopophilia and desire. It points at the pudenda, questioning its eroticism over a subjective form of expression. And it challenges its invisibility. It also challenges pregnancy and the birth canal as both creative and generative site of the body. Moreover, by utilising a custom-made pinhole cylinder penetrating the vagina, it alters the vision of female/male morphology.
